With all the recent troubles going on in the world, celebrations like Mother's Day on Sunday (May 8) have come to mean so much more. So, what better way to celebrate the moms out there than to cook a delicious celebratory feast? For those of you who may not have a mother around, we wish you all the best too, and you're more than welcome to hang out with us instead.
We've put together a few Mother's Day food ideas that'll make anyone feel special on their special day. Each recipe also includes great gift ideas for the Mamas in your life!
Easy-to-Cook Favourites for Mother's Day
1. Pizza on the grill: Everyone loves pizza, it's the timeless celebratory dish that you can share with your loved ones. With all the different toppings you can use, your mom is bound enjoy her custom Mother's Day meal. If she doesn't eat meat, even vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free communities have mouthwatering pizza options.
You can also add a sentimental touch to your pie. You might be thinking, "I'm not very creative," but it doesn't take Picasso to make dough into the shape of heart! Or if you're feeling bold - make a face out of pepperoni slices. Now THAT'LL get her smiling (or even better, laughing). The world is your pizza... and you can even put oyster on it if you want (just be aware that oyster on pizza is not for everyone).
To cook pizza on your grill, you'll need a solid ceramic pizza stone because you don't want gooey pockets of raw dough in your crust or for the bottom to be too soft that it falls apart. You also can't have the dough falling through the grill grates like a Salvador Dali painting - that's a different kind of work of art. Ceramic pizza stones are great for adding a nice golden, crispy crust. For more tips on making pizza, check out our Tips to Grilling the Perfect Pizza! 2. Fajitas: These need no introduction because they're an absolute classic, however, we like to be able to make everything we suggest on a barbecue. Have you ever thought of smoking the meat instead of cooking it on a boring stovetop? The possibilities are endless and a nice and smoky steak would taste delicious with the right seasoning (just promise us you won't use the "taco seasoning" that comes in a plastic bag with a store-bought fajita kit... not today, mother's deserve better than that!).
Another excellent tool that'll help your fajitas come out AMAZING is the A-Maze-N Pellet Smoker that'll let you cook low and slow for up to 11 hours to really get delicious smoky flavour in there.
One of the our most popular pellets are the BBQr's Delight Wood Pellets, which will taste great with any meats depending on which of their many flavours you choose.
If low and slow smoking isn't what you prefer, you can also just throw the meat on the barbecue. We highly suggest the Cast Iron Fajita Pan that can withstand the temperatures of that beast of a barbecue you've got. With a searing hot fajita pan, you can cook your cut up steak, veggies, and other ingredients without having them fall through your grill. Your presentation will also be on it's A-game when you serve your fajitas on this pan with the included wood platter.
Not into fajitas but still want to cook a Mexican-inspired dish? You could also give fish tacos a try. If you do, try out our Grilled Fish Tacos with Mango Salsa recipe and let us know what she likes it.
3. Steak: You can't go wrong with a big, juicy, delicious grilled steak. When you find a high quality piece of steak, sometimes all it needs is a dash of salt and pepper and you let the barbecue do the rest of the work. If you want to make your steak with a specific recipe, check out all of our recipes that feature steak here.
One necessity we ALWAYS recommend is a reliable thermometer like The Sidekick Digital Thermometer or the Therma Wand. People have preferences when it comes to the doneness of their steaks. There's the rare, med-rare, medium, med-well, and super well-done types of people. The BEST and most reliable, consistent, and accurate way to serve steak the way your mom likes it is with a thermometer.
Rare | 125°F |
Medium Rare | 135°F |
Medium | 145°F |
Medium-Well | 150°F |
Well Done | 160°F |
